Brant Atwood: Father, Husband, Leader, and Bull Rider

Brant-Atwood-PBR-RTPR Velocity TourBrant Atwood grew up in the town of Pampa, TX, where oil, cattle, and grain contribute to most of the town’s economy. One can imagine how easy it was for a young boy, who watched his two older cousins traveling and making new friends in the field of bull riding, to be persuaded into loading up and hitting the rodeo trail. It was 1997, and at 11 years old, Atwood started riding bulls at a small junior rodeo series put on by rancher and stock contractor Joe Merrick and family. The series was called Rough Riders and it provided a way for kids like Brant Atwood to better themselves in rodeo, and maybe even in life. It was a program that allowed kids to congregate with family and friends and have fun. Now Atwood has a career as a Professional bull rider. When asked how and why he got into riding bulls, Brant unabashedly gave the credit to his cousins, Curtis and Cody Atwood, as the two driving forces that helped him start his bull riding career.

Atwood has come a long way since 1997; he has accomplished things few bull riders ever have. After working his way up through all of the ranks of Junior Rodeo, Atwood, while still in high school competed in amateur rodeo in associations like the Texas Cowboy Rodeo Association and the New Mexico Rodeo Association. In 2010, he decided to see how well he would do at the professional level. From this writer’s perspective, I think it’s safe to say he has done alright.

Brant has competed in the 2013 PBR World Finals, won the 2012 All-American PRCA Finals, and was also the Reserve Texas Circuit Finals Champion in 2012. Atwood missed out on the 2016 PBR World Finals by 6 spots. He currently competes in the Real Time Pain Relief Velocity tour and hopes to gain enough points to compete in the 2017 PBR tour.

The Built Ford Tough Tour is the highest level of competition in the PBR. The top 45 bull riders go on tour and compete in televised weekly events for the number one position in bull riding and the chance to compete in the PBR Finals in Las Vegas.

But how do you get on the Built Ford Tough tour?

8 Things You Use Every Day That May Be Causing Your Pain

8-everyday-things-that-cause-you-painWhen you talk about pain, there are many things that can cause or contribute to the problem. If you have pain that is related to a sudden injury, then the cause of your pain is quite obvious. However, many people have chronic aches and pains where the cause is less clear. It could be back pain, achy joints, a sore neck, sore feet, or any number of things.

For the most part, we just mark these down as the common issues that come with life and aging. To some degree, this is true. Life does come with aches and pains, and as we age, these problems become more likely. What many people don’t realize is that the causes and contributing factors that lead to these pain issues can often be identified as coming from common things that we do every day.

As we go about our days at work, at home, and out and about, we are often doing things that are contributing to our pain issues. It could be our posture when we sit at the desk, using the wrong type of shoes, or any number of other things. The point is that we generally don’t associate these everyday activities as the sources of pain, and as a result, we keep doing them without taking any steps to correct the issue.

This article looks at some common things that people do and use that may be causing pain. We will consider how these activities and items can cause or contribute to pain and discuss a few steps that can be taken to address the issue at hand.

Lucas Teodoro: Lifesaver and Trailblazer

Lucas-Teodoro-by-Andre-SilvaBullfighting in America has grown to be a very competitive event; gaining notoriety in the sport is a bullfighter’s hardest endeavor. Unlike the matador bullfighting in Spain, bullfighting in America is solely based on preventing bull riders from being injured after the eight-second whistle. Getting new bullfighting jobs is challenging because most rodeo committees book their bullfighters and stock contractors years in advance, some committees even book on two-year or five-year contracts. So, getting your foot in the door takes a significant amount of time, promotion, and relationship building.

In November of 2016, Real Time Pain Relief became the head sponsor of the Real Time Pain Relief Velocity Tour, and we will be writing a few articles that highlight people on our team who have inspirational stories to share. Join us as we meet Lucas Teodoro, the first Brazilian bullfighter to take the plunge and come to the United States to follow his dreams of becoming one of the best bullfighters in America and fighting on the Built Ford Tough Tour.

Benefits of Strength Training for Runners

strength-training-for-runners-benefitsMany serious runners totally dismiss strengthening exercises or any other exercise aside from their normal running routine. But strength-training exercises are essential, especially for those who do massive amounts of running in a given week. Your muscles need more than just a good, long run. Runners sometimes worry about muscle loss in certain areas of the body, and strength training not only maintains healthy muscle mass but also improves running performance. What’s more, strength training helps reduce your risk of injury because it builds strength and support in the muscles that carry the inherent pressure from running. Injuries such as fractures and Achilles tendonitis are often a result of a lack of strength and support while running, as well as improper coordination and balance. Neuromuscular capabilities are improved upon through a regular strength-training regimen. The key to picking the right strengthening exercises for a runner is finding exercises that target the muscles that help with balance. Runners often report increased running speed, stamina, and endurance after just a few weeks of strength training. Here we take a look at all the benefits that come with the integration of a strength-training program to enhance your running routine, and why it’s so important for the avid runner to perform strengthening exercises on a regular basis.

How to Cope with the Depression that Accompanies Chronic Pain

how-to-cope-with-depression-that-accompanies-chronic-painOf the over one billion people suffering from chronic pain, about 60% of them experience depression in the agonizing process. Chronic Pain may last for days, weeks, months, and even years. This often sets us up to feel a deep sense of hopelessness. You might suffer from ongoing headaches, back pain, cancer-related pain, arthritic pain, nerve pain, and the list goes on and on. With such a painful existence, you might stop enjoying the things that once brought you joy. You might even close yourself up in your home because, on the surface, that seems like the safest thing to do. You might stop exercising, experience mood swings, stop seeing your friends, or feel deeply irritated. All these factors may leave you feeling lonely and isolated.

Unfortunately, your primary care physician may not specialize or recognize your depression, which often stops you from reaching out for help.  Those of us, who have a history or predisposition to depression, may have a much harder time managing and treating it. Many of us will feel as if there is no hope for a cure, but keep your chin up, because there is...

12 Professional Bulls: The Best of the Best

12-Best-Professional-BullsSporting events, in general, have a way of getting our blood pumping. Stretching back to Gladiator times people have found entertainment in gathering together in support of players or teams in one extracurricular activity or another. Whether it is for bragging rights, the adrenaline rush, or the plain thrill of overcoming adversity, competition is only gaining ground.

Excluding team sports, there are only a few sporting events where the outcome is not determined by the participant’s own actions. There are sports where it’s an equal combination of how strong your opponent is combined with how strong your performance is. One of these sports is Bull Riding. Bull Riding has gained popularity over the years since headlining associations like the PBR have brought the bull riding world to the 21st century: World-class bulls working against world class riders, the best of the best.

From a business standpoint, the bull riding industry has grown from humble beginnings to what is now a highly lucrative investment. The top three money earners of all time have reached well over the $5,000,000 mark. Two-time world champion JB Mauney is winning the earnings race with a staggering $6,959,342.17. Followed up by three-time world champion Silvano Alves who has earned $5,674,544.00. While Justin McBride who has two world championships of his own has earned $5,150,052.58.

Bull Riding anyone?

Stock contractors have their own lucrative incentives for providing the best bulls in competition. $50,000 and a new stock trailer went to the 2015 Bull of the Year, Sweet Pro’s Long John, owned by D&H Cattle Company. Affiliate associations like the American Bucking Bull Inc. (ABBI) awarded $200,000 to the top bull in the four-year-old division, 32Y Sweet Pro’s Bruiser, owned by the D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co-partnership.

With that amount of money to be won, you can guess how much time and pedigree analysis is put into the bucking bull side of this equation. Human athletes are recognized for their sporting achievements, their win streaks, their records, and their ability to be the best for the longest amount of time, but what about the bulls?
In no numerical order, several prolific bull riders and stock contractors weighed in on who they would use as the most influential bulls in bull riding history.

Who has been the best of the best?

And the survey says…

12 Healthy Whole Grains for Your Diet

12 Healthy Whole GrainsMillions of people are looking for ways to eat whole grains rather than refined grains. Whether you are looking to remove refined grains from your diet because you just want to eat healthier, or you have discovered that you are allergic to gluten, there are numerous alternative options to eating refined grains. The term whole grain refers to the fact that the grain kernel still has its bran, whereas refined grains have been processed so that they have a longer shelf life. However, during this refining process, much of the fiber and nutrients is removed from the grain. According to the U.S. Whole Grains Council, eating 100% whole grains provides numerous health benefits, which include reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease and other heart complications, preventing obesity, and reducing the development of inflammatory diseases. Here we take a look at 12 of the healthiest, nutritional whole grains available on the market, as well as what makes them so beneficial to our bodies.

How to Eat to Rebuild Cartilage in Joints

how-to-eat-to-rebuild-cartilage-in-jointsCartilage serves a number of different functions in the body. For the joints, it acts as a pad to reduce friction and prevent damage. Over time, cartilage can be damaged and deteriorate. When this occurs, the bones no longer have the protection that they need at the joint, and it can result in pain, inflammation and a lack of mobility.

A lack of cartilage at a joint will result in osteoarthritis. This condition can affect any joint, but it is especially common in the knees, hips, wrists, and elbows. To address conditions surrounding cartilage injury and deterioration, doctors may offer a number of solutions. They might recommend pain management strategies, supplements, physical therapy, and in severe cases, they might recommend surgery.

In addressing cartilage loss or damage, the body needs to be able to rebuild the tissue structures at the joint. To produce the fibers that make up cartilage, you need to ensure that you have a balanced diet that provides all of the necessary nutrients for building the tissue.

For people that suffer from the pain that comes with cartilage loss, there are a number of foods that can be used to help your body rebuild the cartilage at joints.

The Health Benefits of Cupping

the-health-benefits-of-cuppingAs people search for different treatment options for things like pain and illness, many consider different types of alternative or complementary medicine. Either as a standalone treatment or to assist other remedies, many of these alternatives can be quite effective.

Among the many forms of alternative medicine that are out there, you may come across the practice of cupping. This is an ancient form of medicine that has been practiced in Eastern cultures and manuscripts from Ancient Egypt have been found that describe the practice of cupping.

In cupping, a therapist places cups on different points of the body to create suction. Most commonly, the cups are made from glass, but you may also find plastic or bamboo cups to be used. Depending on the practitioner and the condition that they are trying to address, different techniques and methods may be used.

For some, cupping may be used as a standalone treatment, but it is commonly used as a complement to other forms of treatment like acupuncture and massage.
